The behaviour of political leaders affects every aspect of life, but until recently the concept of political leadership has not been a major focus of study. Recognizing the need for such study, Glenn Paige presents a strong argument for developing the research, educational, applied and institutional foundations that would make the scientific study of political leadership a new sub-field of political science.
In the first comprehensive attempt to focus disciplinary and interdisciplinary attention on this subject. Paige reviews resources in political science, the other social sciences, the annual sciences, the arts and humanities, and in the concepts of experienced political leaders themselves. He then offers an integrative framework for analysing political leadership behaviour, illustrated by vivid biographical data.
Paige proposes alternatives for the future development of an exciting new field. He advocates the establishment of a World Centre for the Scientific Study of Political Leadership, whose projects would include transnational scientific research on political leadership problems of special interest for the world-oriented educational and applied science efforts in the study of political leadership.
An especially noteworthy feature of ‘The Scientific Study of Political Leadership is the extensive appendix that includes a bibliography of over two hundred doctoral dissertations with title references to ‘leadership’, and a selected multidisciplinary bibliography essential for further research.
